Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (SPF) is a two-component mixture that combines just before it is sprayed. The mixture forms an expanding foam when it comes in contact with a surface. It comes in two different forms: closed cell and open cell. It is used for a variety of different insulation purposes for new construction and existing buildings.

Open cell foam statistics:

- ½ lb

- Porous

- 3-4 R-value per inch

- Little structural strength

- Requires trimming - waste is disposed

The lbs measure the density of the foam - the more lbs the more the foam expands. The less porous the foam the less it will absorb moisture, which can reduce mold. R-value is the measure of the thermal resistance. The higher the R-value the greater the resistance. The stronger the foam, the more it adds to the strength of the structure.

Advantages of foam insulation:

- Fills in all gaps – this blocks airflow (creates an air seal).

- Reduces the build-up of moisture that can cause mold growth.

- Increases structural strength.

- Helps control sound.
